Fru was born in Oxford in 1966. At the age of 42, after numerous obstacles and delays, she finally studied at London College of Communication, UAL, completing her degree in Graphic and Media Design in 2013. After another decade of delays she is now a full time artist working in her studio at home in London.
All of Fru’s work is derived from old, forgotten, disused and found items. She looks for the beauty in wear and degradation with the aim of enhancing these details through a multitude of processes. Her current practice incorporates a combination of analogue and digital disciplines including collage, pencil work, short writings and photography, followed by digital manipulations.
The transformation of comparatively small objects into significantly larger-scale pieces reveals and enhances age, deterioration and erosion. Retaining elements such as creases, fading, delicate frayed edges and rough, worn sides is essential to maintaining the integrity of beautiful details from the original objects.
Fru's work initially involves dissemination, collage and layering, and reassembling original objects and ephemera into variations of their old selves. These experimental trials evolve and emerge into the early, unfinished pieces. Each one is then elevated through digital conversion and extensive forms of editing.
